The Bay Minette Fire Department was founded in 1908 as an all volunteer department and officially chartered in 1960. Today, your department is staffed with 14 career firefighters, 5 part-time and 19 volunteers who serve 8,500 people living within Bay Minette's city limits and an additional 10,000 citizens living within Bay Minette Fire Department's 82 square mile jurisdiction.
Our most valuable asset is the men and women whom make up the Bay Minette Fire Department. Our firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians and First Responders are out on the frontline, providing you and your loved ones with professional and caring customer service. Our Fire Department has been recognized as one of the best departments in the country by the Insurance Services Organization and has been awarded a Class 4 ISO Public Protection Classification Rating. It is because of the men and women of our fire department that we are recognized as a very proactive and professional organization.
The Bay Minette Fire Department responds to an average of 1700 calls per year. We make an additional 4000 contacts through our car safety seat inspection program, our free smoke detector program, and fire inspections.
We have three twenty foot storage pods stocked with hurricane supplies including sleeping cots, bed covers and hygiene supplies. This will enable our department to prepare a shelter for approximately 250 people quickly in the event of a disaster. We received this equipment from the State EMA and the Baldwin County EMA.
We also received a twenty eight foot first aid medical trailer from Baldwin County EMA in response to the BP oil spill. On the inside it looks like a doctor’s office that can be used at festivals and other events to treat sick or injured citizens. It can also be set up for mobile blood drives or to give medications or immunizations in mass. If something were to happen at the hospital, it could be used as a quick treat facility. It is equipped with an area for responders to rest and rehab for extended responses.
We have also received funding from the US Department of Homeland Security through an Assistance to Firefighters Grant in the amount of $12,767 to purchase 45 self contained breathing apparatus’. Firefighters use these devices to enter burning buildings that would be immediately dangerous to life and health.
Bay Minette Fire Department has applied for grants from AFG each year since 2002 and has been successful in years 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010. The grants are competitive and very difficult to receive. We are competing with nearly every fire department in the United States. The members of the department sit down around the first of the year and review our most pressing need and we apply for those needs. The process takes almost 2 years to complete each grant award. (Application process, waiting for award, announcement of award, and administration) We have received nearly three quarters of a million dollars in federal grants since 2002.
